Born Oscar Wills, 10 February, 1916, Houston, Texas. Died 21 October, 1969, Kingman, Arizona
A musician since the late 1930s, Oscar Wills was resident in Louisiana in the fifties, singing blues and playing guitar (also harmonica, though not on record). His main influences were DeFord Bailey and Sonny Boy Williamson (II) on harmonica and Guitar Slim and Elmore James in the guitar domain. Wills was not recorded until he set up his own label, Speed Records, in the mid-1950s. By that time he also had his own band, the Heartbreakers, consisting of Mighty Joe Young on guitar, Eddie Williams on piano and Jimmy White on drums. Their first record was the piano- dominated "The Fight" (Speed 6863, 1955). Wills never was a full-time musician ; he was chiefly occupied running a television repair shop. This gave him his nickname, T.V. Slim, which is the label credit on all of his Speed recordings.
Wills's brief moment in the spotlight came in 1957. He had written an uptempo song called "Flat Foot Sam", about an unfortunate soul who was "always in a jam". Mira Smith from Shreveport , the owner of Ram Records, had just set up a new label, Clif Records, in partnership with Cliff Hagen. "Flat Foot Sam" was first recorded for Clif (# 103), credited to T.V. Slim and his Heartbreakers. It made some noise in the Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas region, mainly due to heavy plugging on the Stan Lewis-sponsored R&B show on KWKH in Shreveport. Thanks to his connections with Leonard Chess, Stan Lewis managed to get the record leased to Chess Records for national distribution. Instead of reissuing the disc right away on one of his labels (Chess, Checker, Argo), Leonard Chess asked Wills if he could go to New Orleans and do a recut of "Flat Foot Sam" with Cosimo Matassa's Studio band. This second, much improved version was recorded in June 1957, with prominent roles for Robert Parker on tenor sax and Charles 'Hungry' Williams on drums. It was released in August on Argo 5277, under his own name, Oscar Wills. While the Clif release showed the song's writer as Clara Wills (probably Oscar's wife), writer's credit on the Argo single now went to O. Wills and S. Lewis. This was a fairly common practice at Chess : the artist / songwriter had to share the publishing with someone who would give the record exposure, Stan Lewis in this case. Why Leonard Chess still decided to reissue the Clif version on Checker 870 (in the same month as the Argo remake) is a mystery to me. Ironically, Billboard gave the original version of "Flat Foot Sam" a higher rating (77) than the Argo single (75). (Issue of August 26, 1957.)
As Wills had only recorded one song during the New Orleans session, the other side had to be filled by another artist. This became the instrumental "Nervous Boogie" by Paul Gayten, who had produced the June session. The two sides were almost too good to be on the same disc. In the end it was "Nervous Boogie" that generated the greatest demand, enough for a peak position of # 68 on the Billboard pop charts in December 1957. You won't find "Flat Foot Sam" in the index of any Joel Whitburn book, but it still was a good seller on the back of "Nervous Boogie" and has achieved the status of a minor rock n roll classic. There were rockabilly-styled cover versions by Tommy Blake on Sun and by Earl Reed's Rhythm Rockers on Cherokee (vocal by Johnny Scoggins) and in later years "Flat Foot Sam" was recorded by the Blues Band, Mickey Murray, Jim Byrnes, Hank Mizell, Mike Morgan, Brian Setzer, Terry Hanck and Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. Mike Sanchez includes the song regularly in his live set. There even exists a group in Connecticut called Flat Foot Sam and the Educated Fools. Check them out (on Spotify, for instance), their music isn't bad at all. The song spawned two sequels, "Flat Foot Sam Met Jim Dandy" (aka "Flat Foot Sam Made A Bet") and "Flat Foot Sam Is Back", this time credited to T.V. Slim. He continued to record for his own Speed label, also after relocating to California in 1959. The second half of the 1960s saw further releases on tiny West Coast labels : Excell, Timbre, Pzazz (owned by Paul Gayten), and Ideel. One of my favourites is "T.V. Man" (Excell 104, 1966), about his experiences as a television repair man. Sadly, Oscar Wills died in a car crash in Arizona while returning from a gig in Chicago, on October 21, 1969. He never became a household name, but he had a powerful voice, played a mean guitar, and displayed humor in his songwriting. (Black Cat Rockabilly)

Twilightzone! is one of my favorite music blogs because we have similar tastes and they come up with the goodies. Stuff I have old vinyls of, stuff I have on ancient homemade cassettes, stuff I've been looking for, and new-to-me cool stuff that enlightens or makes me laugh. I have a very extensive music collection, and was looking for something missing: that beautiful but haunted and lonely sound of Ennio Morricone's music: spaghetti westerns!
I was simply looking for all the soundtracks from those countless obscure Italian Westerns that where made in the 60s and 70s. But how to find them, or worse, the titles?
This collection, as well as Part 2, 3, and 4, hosts them probably all. It also has an extensive booklet with very good info on the music, as well as the movies that made them, or is it the other way around? "Spaghetti Westerns" (Classic Italian Soundtracks) Vol. 2 - 1995


While the first album contained lots and lots of great tracks, coupled with some merely pretty good ones, this album has almost only really great ones! There is hardly a single "pretty good" track here! This continues the tradition of a few better known tracks, such as the theme to Django and the Hellbenders, as well as plenty of lesser known film scores, in U.S.
For those of you keeping score, this is my second purchase in an attempt to locate music from Red Dead Revolver; I am happy to say that music from "A Man Called King" and "Death on High Hill" fit that bill.
This is a needed item for any kind of Spaghetti Western Music Collector. Any kind of fan of the Italian film genre will apreciate this album. This contains all the components for a quintessential spaghetti western CD: songs with the high, hauntingly beautiful backgrounds, clumsily translated lyrics, and of course, the inescapable Ennio Morricone. This addition to DRG's Classic Italian Soundtracks series captures spaghetti Westerns at their eeriest and funniest. Ennio Morricone is predominant, of course, with tracks to such films as A Pistol for Ringo and Blood and Guns, and vocal themes to The Return of Ringo and Death Rides a Horse. A rarely heard voice-free version of "My Name Is Nobody" has the virtue of sounding like a soda pop commercial. Other pasta-and-pistols maestros such as Piero Piccioni ("I Don't Forget... I Kill"), Carlo Savina ("The Two Ringos from Texas"), and Luis Bacalov ("Gold of the Proud Ones") make an impressive showing, though there are some dull moments. In contrast to our domesticated Tiomkin-style Hollywood clichés, these eccentric to melancholy flourishes represent fantasies of the American West nurtured by a pastry-crazed European imagination. - Joseph Lanza

Don Leady the leader of the band is the singer, songwriter, guitarist, accordianist and producer with a vision. He puts together an audio gumbo of Gulf Coast styles blended with rock seasonings. A native of Cool Valley, Missouri, Don Leady continues to experiment with the guitar to find new techniques and sounds. It certainly doesn't stop with the guitar, he's gone into fiddle, steel guitar, and most recently the accordian. His education came from masters of the art, Chet Atkins, Les Paul and later BB King, because their music was readily available. He heard the Ventures and Duane Eddy a bit further down the line and loved their style. "Have Guitar, Will Travel" by Duane Eddy freaked him out totally, it was amazing. He caught Joe Maphis and the Collins Kids on the TV show, Ranch Party, and Joe Maphis made a huge impression on him. Joe Maphis became one of Don Leady's idols. Hearing Joe Maphis play the boogie woogie guitar and thinking to himself that the guy was picking the guitar ten times faster than Duane Eddy, Don Leady was star-struck. The Tailgators began in 1984 and continued into 2000, with a charismatic style of music that is very contagious. Don Leady, Jean-Jacques (JJ) Barrera and Chico Oropeza, are the Tailgators that are cookin' up the tunes on their 1996 release, It's A Hog Groove. Billy Gibbons, of ZZ Top, calls the trio from Austin Texas his favorite American band. The trio is one that should not be missed at a live venue, if there are any tickets left, they generally sell out fast. Some of the other names the Tailgators have been rumored to use in and around the Austin scene are, Zydeco Loco and Gators Del Norte. Evan Johns joins the LeRoi Bros for 1 LP!



It goes without saying that no one in Austin, Texas' LeRoi Brothers is named LeRoi. Debuting on the unpretentious Check This Action as a trio (singer/guitarists Steve Doerr and Don Leady and drummer Mike Buck) plus a guest bassist, the LeRois set to rocking without ado, reeling off energetically unreconstructed rock'n'roll/R&B covers (plus a few originals that don't slow down the party one bit) in an unmistakable Southwestern accent.

TWILIGHTZONE!: The Le Roi Brothers "Forget About The Danger... Think Of The Fun" 1985

"...This Austin, TX, rock roll band was formed in 1981...The core of the band has always centered around Mike Buck's solid drumming (probably the finest drummer Texas has to offer) & Steve Doerr's rocking vocals & songwriting, while the band as a whole can capably take on anything from blues to rockabilly to cajun to country to the grungiest of garage rock roll..."

The great TWILIGHTZONE! Blog has posted the Leroi Brothers' classic 12"/6 song EP, "Forget About the Danger...Think of the Fun". Although I still like "Check This Action!" on Amazing Records, their first album, the best. This record is great stuff, containing their most popular tune, "The Pretty Little Lights of Town".

My favorite memory of this era-Leroi's, was seeing them on Good Morning America (GMA was broadcasting from Dallas for the Republican Nat'l Convention) at 7 or 8AM, sweatin' in the TV studio, churning out the great rock'n roll with a green musician-after-the-sun-comes-up pallor that even the TV make-up couldn't conceal!

My first brush with the LeRois was when I picked up their "Forget About The Danger..." EP, which blew me away back in '84. - "jbesanko" (Crofton, MD United States)



This Austin, TX, rock roll band was formed in 1981. One of the longest-lasting bands on the eclectic Austin scene, the original lineup consisted of drummer Mike Buck (founding member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds), guitarist Don Leady (later forming Tail Gators), guitarist Steve Doerr, and bassist Alex Napier (now a member of The Mystic Knights). Over the years, various members have included Joe Doerr (Hand of Glory), Jackie Newhouse, Sarah Brown, Evan Johns (see separate entry), and current members guitarist Rick "Caspar" Rawls and bassist Pat Collins. The core of the band has always centered around Buck's solid drumming (probably the finest drummer Texas has to offer) and Steve Doerr's rocking vocals and songwriting, while the band as a whole can capably take on anything from blues to rockabilly to cajun to country to the grungiest of garage rock roll. Consistent winners of the Best Roots Rock Band award in the Austin Chronicle's reader's poll, the band has retained a loyal following both here and abroad. - Cub Koda, All Music Guide
