Elvis, Sunshine Ruby, & the Sportatorium + wrestling promo + Homer Henderson

The Dallas Sportatorium has a rich history other than wrestling. The best country and early rock'n'roll acts all performed here. The Big D Jamboree held its own with the Lousiana Hayride and other such venues. Elvis, Johnny Cash, Sunshine Ruby and other legendary acts all performed. This is a brief history of a place and time that sadly no longer exists.

Promo for Dallas Sportatorium Wrestling Card 8/4/89

Marc Lowrance hypes the fateful show where World Class Championship Wrestling officially became the Dallas branch of Jerry Jarrett's USWA.

Homer Henderson at the Sportatorium, Dallas, TX

On Valentines Day 1997 we went to the World Famous Sportatorium in Dallas to see some wrestling with musical accompaniment by Homer Henderson. Homer started off with the Star Spangled Banner, then provided musical fanfare for the wrestlers' procession to the ring. These were the declining days for the Sportatorium and were also the declining days for my video camera. Didn't get nearly enough footage as was warranted by this momentous occasion, but I guess it's better than nothing.

Artaud in Full Bloom (1 of a collection at link)
"Where others present their works, I claim to do no more than show my mind." -- Artaud, The Umbilicus of Limbo (1925)
I covered Artaud only once before, in my 16th-ever post back in August 2007, which downplays how important his writings are to me. Read him at any time, but the younger and angrier the better.
From a letter to Paule Thevenin dated Feb. 24, 1948. Artaud died on March 4, 1948:
"I had a vision this afternoon -- I saw those who are going to follow me and who are still not completely embodied because pigs like those at the restaurant last night eat too much. There are some who eat too much and others like me who can no longer eat without spitting."

Charlie Roberts is a consummate collector of images, with an organizational system resembling the interior of a Whitman's Sampler. He perceives the world of people and things as a philatelist does, sifting through an unwieldy compendium of faces, hairdos, boots, magazines, art, animals, vehicles, potables, and foodstuffs, and then using gouache to depict portions of this array with varying degrees of fidelity. Franz von Stuck - Tilla Durieux as Circe (1913)
He's lost out to Klimt in the reputation stakes, probably more because of Klimt's decorative qualities than through any fault of his own, but I prefer Von Stuck myself, as he seems to be hauling his images toward him from his dreams, rather than brushing them on to the canvas.
Google him to see what I mean.
Tilla Durieux was also painted by Renoir the next year, but he gave her hands like a pork-butcher which I am sure she must have hated.

From the pen of Bob Dylan, circa 1963, these are the poet-singer's handwritten working lyrics to "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall". Written here are the first three stanzas of the song, with cross-outs & lines signifying repeated words. Dylan wrote these lyrics on 8.5" x 6" stationery. Although the paper bears two significant tears in two places, has a long crease and is stained, the handwritten lyrics, in black ink, are in excellent condition - strong and fully legible. This is an incredible rock & roll artifact showing the working of Dylan's mind as he worked out the lyrics to this classic song. Comes with a signed & dated letter from forensic document examiner James A. Blanco. Estimate: $30,000 - $40,000.

Shrimpenstein was on KHJ channel 9 in LA from 1966 to 1968. This is the opening theme sung by Dr. Von Schtick (Gene Moss in a bad Boris Karloff imitation and the Tijuana Bats.
The hosts were Gene Moss (Dr. Von Schtick) & Jim Thurman (voices). Shrimpenstein was a miniature Frankenstein monster (a ventriloquist dummy who was “created” when jellybeans were thrown into the Monster Machine) Moss & Thurman wrote the Roger Ramjet cartoons & did advertising campaigns, mostly for radio. Moss later did voice-overs for LA’s channel 2 news and Disney/Touchstone pictures previews. Thurman also wrote & did voices for Sesame Street.
