Country music legend George Jones confidently strode on to the historical and ornate Majestic Theater in San Antonio Friday night looking relaxed and at ease.

The 80-year-old Jones was preceded with a few cover songs like Waylon Jennings’ “Only Woman That’ll Walk the Line,” and Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” by his talented seven member Georgia Boys Band.

Singing “Why Baby Why,” Jones voice was instantly observed as a little hoarse, but the music icon forged on like the ultimate and passionate performer he is.

“If ya’ll keep that kind of enthusiasm up, we are liable to stay here ‘til 2 or 3 in the morning,” Jones told the willing crowd. “Heck, I’ve been known to stay 2 or 3 days in my time.”

Oh, I am sure we can sing you plenty of drinking and cheating songs.”

Dressed in a black and white shirt, black jeans, black leather jacket, and peering through his tinted glasses, Jones’  could still muster out his old familiar style of long-syllabled country singing.  He was immediately embraced by the Majestic fans with a standing ovation.

Fans felt blessed to see Jones, who debuted his first single hit in 1959 for Mercury Records. Much of his life was chronicled on a back screen behind the band as he sang hits like “I Always Get Lucky With You,” “You’re Still On My Mind,” “The Race Is On,” “The Window Up Above” and “Walk Through This World With Me.”

I can’t think of any singer that can make a sad country song any sadder than George Jones.

True to his roots, the music pioneer honored The Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame and even paid a stirring tribute by dedicating his song “Who’s Going to Feel Their Shoes” to friends as the images of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Tammy Wynette, Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Jimmy Rogers, Charlie Rich, and Marty Robbins flashed on the screen.

Brittany Allyn was featured in some of the opening songs, and sing duet with Jones with some of the Wynette-Jones hits, like “Golden Ring.”

Goosebumps were plenty when Jones went through of a medley of  “She Still Thinks I Care” and “White Lightning” and ended his show with his signature hits “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair.”
