Vikki Dougan - Nicknamed "The Back" because of her dresses that were more than backless - they were cut down to just above the gluteal cleft, causing quite a commotion. The Limeliters wrote a song titled "Vikki Dougan" to commemorate this phenomenon, in which they sing of her "callipygian cleft" ("callipygian" meaning "having shapely buttocks") and beg her, "Vikki, turn your back on me". Sun Ra and his Arkestra featurig John Gilmore on Tenor Sax I don’t have any information about this as I don’t have the disc, just the cover, which is “homemade.” The back is all pasted over with gold foil and the front has hand-coloring and some stickers. I think that this covered one of Sun Ra’s records on Saturn. Any Sun Ra followers out there that can shine some light here?

It’s Super-Sonic Jazz, Sun Ra’s first record on his Saturn label. The title has been covered by the blue tape in your scan. The record originally came out in 1957 with a different cover. This one is the 1968 edition. Details, plus lots more Sun Ra minutiae, found here — http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~campber/sunra.html. Look about half-way down the page for a minty fresh scan of this record cover.

All of that is right, and this is also a fairly early release on El Saturn, with the band still in Chicago. For most of his career, Ra favored private releases and even favored raw, primitive recording conditions – even though, being the consummate jazz outsider, these conditions were as frequently motivated by finances as by design.
Because records like this were sold by The Arkestra at shows, and because they were hand covered like this, copies and track lists varied widely for years, making documentation sometimes quite difficult.

Fantastic! Thanks Phillipp and Carl. Carl, so perhaps the hand-crafted cover with the foil and stickers was sold this was at a concert? (Vs. the god-forbid thought that some kid at home defaced his dad’s valuable record?

I don’t really have a preoccupation with death, but for some reason I am endlessly compelled by the image of a skull. That said, most artistic renderings of skulls can be quite cliched. Illustrator Geordan Moore is the first person in a while who I’ve seen draw a skull in a way that I’ve never seen before.

From: http://crappytaxidermy.com/post/237037833/rat-kings-are-phenomena-said-to-arise-when-a

Rat kings are phenomena said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, ice, excrement or simply knotted. The animals reputedly grow together while joined at the tails. The numbers of rats that are joined together can vary, but naturally rat kings formed from a larger number of rats are rarer. The phenomenon is particularly associated with Germany, where the majority of instances have been reported. Historically, rat kings were seen as an extremely bad omen, particularly associated with plagues. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_king_(folklore)

Special License Plates Tag Careless Drivers Special license plates for traffic violators are being considered as a safety measure by Cliff Davis, commissioner of public safety in Memphis, Tenn. If the measure is adopted motorists who persistently break traffic laws will be required to run in their regular licence plates for special tags, similar to that shown in the photograph above, bearing a skull and the words “traffic-law violator.” - Popular Science Mar, 1939

Jalacy Hawkins, best known as Screamin' Jay Hawkins (July 18, 1929 – February 12, 2000) was an African-American musician, singer, and actor. Famed chiefly for his powerful, operatic vocal delivery and wildly theatrical performances of songs such as "I Put a Spell on You" and "Constipation Blues," Hawkins sometimes used macabre props onstage, probably making him the first shock rocker. From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screamin%27_Jay_Hawkins

Screamin’ Jay Hawkins — I Put A Spell On You “Hawkins originally envisioned the tune as a refined ballad.” The entire band was intoxicated during a recording session where “Hawkins screamed, grunted, and gurgled his way through the tune with utter drunken abandon.” The resulting performance was no ballad but instead a “raw, guttural track” that became his greatest commercial success and surpassed a million copies in sales. From: http://lacontessa.tumblr.com/post/220885438/hannes-bok-mambaloa-1947

Hannes Bok, Mambaloa, 1947. Hannes Bok, pseudonym for Wayne Woodard (July 2, 1914–April 11, 1964), was an American artist and illustrator, as well as an amateur astrologer and writer of fantasy fiction and poetry. He painted nearly 150 covers for various science fiction, fantasy, and detective fiction magazines, as well as contributing hundreds of black and white interior illustrations. Bok's work graced the pages of calendars and early fanzines, as well as dust jackets from specialty book publishers like Arkham House, Llewellyn, Shasta, and Fantasy Press. His paintings achieved a luminous quality through the use of an arduous glazing process, which was learned from his mentor, Maxfield Parrish. Bok was the first artist to win a Hugo Award. - from Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannes_Bok

Une fois n'est pas coutume, j'ai glané sur le net l'ensemble des couvertures présentées.

That's covered in Rock Entitlement 203. This Dister shot was probably staged like a 1000 other shots on the Champs, but when I was holed up in the Hotel Astrid down at the end of avenue Carnot (off camera to the right) back in '06, it never occurred to *me* to do such a thing. I mean negotiating the traffic around and approaching the Arc is not for the faint of heart.

Check out this Octopus pin that was an addition to the Syd Barrett Opel fanzine. The button was only available to the subscribers of the Syd Barrett 'OPEL' Fanzine. The year of this was 1984. The name 'OPEL' came from the name of an unreleased song from the Madcap Sessions. The button has the Octopus logo from the song of the same name released 11/14/1969 on the Harvest label.
