Roger Miller, who had already written hits for Faron Young, Ray Price, Ernest Tubb, Jim Reeves, and George Jones, was just getting started as a performing artist. Fiddler Gordon Terry joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1950 and played with Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys. His biggest single, “Wild Honey”, charted in 1957. Claude Gray’s career was hot in 1961: "I'll Just Have a Cup of Coffee (Then I'll Go)," was a crossover pop hit at that time. George Jones, still basking here in the glow of his 1959 hit “White Lightnin’”, would soon move away from his honky-tonk, rebel image: His smooth ballad “Tender Years” was Number One for seven weeks later in 1961. Rose Maddox (formerly of the fantastic hillbilly band Maddox Brothers and Rose) had five Top 20 hits in that year, including both sides of the 45 “Kissing my Pillow” and “I Want to Live Again”, which are performed here. Finally, Johnny Cash performs his hits, in- cluding “Luther’s Boogie”, which, interestingly, was the highest charter of all of them.

The Moving Sidewalks was an American psychedelic blues rock band, most notable for giving future ZZ Top guitarist, Billy Gibbons, his start in the music business. The band consisted of Gibbons on guitar, Don Summers on bass, Dan Mitchell on drums and Tom Moore on keyboards.

Gibbons founded the Texas psychedelic group in the mid-1960s and quickly drew a large following, especially among the Houston "teen scene". They recorded several singles and one full-length album, Flash. Their single "99th Floor" was well received and topped the charts at No. 1 in Houston for six weeks. The success of this record led the Sidewalks to sign with Wand Records which then released "Need Me", also a Top 10 Hit for the band. The group was asked to open for many rock tours, including Jimi Hendrix and The Doors.

After Tom Moore and Don Summers were drafted into the United States Army, Gibbons and Mitchell added Lanier Greig and formed the original ZZ Top. They recorded the first ZZ Top record, “Salt Lick”, which was released on London Records.

While attending Warner Brothers' art school in Hollywood, California, Gibbons engaged with his first bands including The Saints, Billy G & the Blueflames, and The Coachmen. By 1967, Gibbons returned to Houston and went forward forming an artfully designed band, conceptually inspired by friend and fellow musician, Roky Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators. The "Moving Sidewalks" name was chosen and shortly thereafter 99th Floor. Around this time Gibbons had developed quite a camaraderie with the legendary Jimi Hendrix. As a guest on The Dick Cavett Show, Hendrix would later be quoted as saying that Gibbons was slated to be the next big thing as a guitarist. The Moving Sidewalks continued to appear along with the 13th Floor Elevators at the short-lived yet legendary Houston psychedelic venue, Love Street Light Circus at Allen's Landing. The Elevators set was cut short by Houston Police who arrested the band's lead singer Roky Erickson for marijuana possession.

The Moving Sidewalks pose for a portrait with Jimi Hendrix whom they had just opened for at the Municipal Auditorium on February 15, 1968 in San Antonio, Texas. Jimi Hendrix gave the Pink Fender Stratocaster he’s holding to Billy Gibbons. Gibbons told Guitar World in 1985, ” He said the color pink was not conductive to burning, so he gave it to me and said, Play on brother…”

Walt Andrus, best known as the engineer of numerous Thirteenth Floor Elevators sessions, has gone where the pyramid meets the eye. Andrus, who engineered many of the most famous sessions for Houston's infamous International Artists label during the psychedelic period, was living in Truth or Consequences, N.M., when he passed away from melanoma. He was 72.

While Andrus is most famous for his Thirteenth Floor Elevators session work, he was also involved with recording seminal Texas psychedelic acts like Lost & Found, Golden Dawn, the Red Krayola's The Parable of Arable Land, and Fever Tree's 1968 classic Another Time, Another Place. He also worked for a time with Don Robey at the Duke-Peacock label.

Easter Everywhere, considered by many to be the fullest flowering of psychedelic music, was recorded at Andrus Studios on Broadway near the Houston Ship Channel during the summer of 1967. Most International Artists material was recorded at Andrus's studio until IA purchased Gold Star studios circa 1968.

In a 1996 interview with Richie Unterberger, the Red Krayola's Mayo Thompson said of Andrus, "Walt Andrus was head of the best studio in Houston, and in that particular period, he recorded everybody. Euphoria, who were definitely West Coast psychedelic progenitors of surf music, South Bay surf music, incredible guitar playing, power trio, the bass player out of the band that made "Pipeline" or "Wipe Out" or one of those kind of things, and a great drummer and a good guitar player. What you saw with Hendrix - the same principle, taken to its highest expression. Walt recorded this album."

Andrus was instrumental in remixing the Elevators catalog for the 10-CD recent box set Sign of the 3 Eyed Men.

Walt was a great guy and a wonderful studio engineer. We recorded several records at Andrus Studios in Houston, the most well known being, "Splash 1", written by Roky Ericson, early in our career as a rock band during the late 60's in Houston, TX.

Just got this interesting message from Odessan Bob Bailey:

"The Shades recorded "I Am the Walrus" in Walt's studio about three weeks after the Beatles released it. We then performed it on the "IT" show. Special guest that taping for "IT" was B.J. Thomas. I tried to see if the Quad video tapes still were around but the station had just destroyed them the year I called. ( 1990's) I remember the control room guys showing me the Quad recorders which were brand new. They looked exactly like the 16 track at IA.

The Walt Andrus photo above comes from my International Artists label tribute page, and nowhere else.

I have another photo that shows the interior of Andrus' studio at the time of "Easter Everywhere", as well as an interview with him from 1974 where he discusses "Easter", but since people on the internet like to steal things like this without giving credit, I guess these will remain unseen.

Both my Andrus photos came from Andrew Brown, a serious Texas music researcher.

Anyway, R.I.P Walt Andrus.

My father died on 10-21-09 of Melanoma at the of age 72. He was living in Truth or Consequences New Mexico at the time of his death and the studio on Broadway was in Houston.

I have spent the past six weeks working on a documentary about The
Cellar. The more research I read, and the more interviews I get on
tape, the more excited I become. This documentary will be able to
reach a much larger audience than first I expected because of its
universal relevance that will be established as the documentary
explores the Cellar Club's juxtaposition to the relevant social issues
of that time, parochial as well as global. It will also examine
poignant existential issues within a specific population as it
remembers the past and reflects on the present.

I need photos, film, and memorabilia related to The Cellar (Fort
Worth, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio) as soon as possible. This is
where the members of the list serve can help me in telling The Cellar
story. I am only interested in photos or film taken in or in front of
the clubs between 1959 and 1974, and/or musicians, patrons, and
employees associated with The Cellar during said time frame. The
photos that are published on the web are exactly what I´m looking for,
except I need better resolution than can I can get by copying from the
internet. If you can help me, I need CD ROMs of your images or the
actual photos so I can scan them. If you do send photos for me to
scan, they will be handled with the upmost care and promptly returned.
I can´t guarantee that every image will be used, but I need to have as
much choice as possible.

Moving Sidewalks - ZZ's Houston Roots
[Texas Rockmusic Heritage] (1967-69)


This Houston band was most famous to be later evolved into the first ZZ Top line-up. Garage fans love them for their singles, most notably "99th Floor", their lone album "Flash" is highly praised by heavy-psych enthusiasts. This CD (Lone Star Records LSR 19629 / 1994) contains most of their singles (sadly they only took an unreleased take of "99th Floor" and omitted the official release) with alternate versions and the whole album (the tracks are not in the right order, though) plus three unreleased tracks of whom the moody "Stay Away" is the best. Furthermore you can read an interview with the band done in the '60s shortly before the release of "Flash".
