The Moving Sidewalks saga (with Hendrix & more) [REPOST from 11/14/09]

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moving_Sidewalks
The Moving Sidewalks was an American psychedelic blues rock band, most notable for giving future ZZ Top guitarist, Billy Gibbons, his start in the music business. The band consisted of Gibbons on guitar, Don Summers on bass, Dan Mitchell on drums and Tom Moore on keyboards.
Gibbons founded the Texas psychedelic group in the mid-1960s and quickly drew a large following, especially among the Houston "teen scene". They recorded several singles and one full-length album, Flash. Their single "99th Floor" was well received and topped the charts at No. 1 in Houston for six weeks. The success of this record led the Sidewalks to sign with Wand Records which then released "Need Me", also a Top 10 Hit for the band. The group was asked to open for many rock tours, including Jimi Hendrix and The Doors.
After Tom Moore and Don Summers were drafted into the United States Army, Gibbons and Mitchell added Lanier Greig and formed the original ZZ Top. They recorded the first ZZ Top record, “Salt Lick”, which was released on London Records.

While attending Warner Brothers' art school in Hollywood, California, Gibbons engaged with his first bands including The Saints, Billy G & the Blueflames, and The Coachmen. By 1967, Gibbons returned to Houston and went forward forming an artfully designed band, conceptually inspired by friend and fellow musician, Roky Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators. The "Moving Sidewalks" name was chosen and shortly thereafter 99th Floor. Around this time Gibbons had developed quite a camaraderie with the legendary Jimi Hendrix. As a guest on The Dick Cavett Show, Hendrix would later be quoted as saying that Gibbons was slated to be the next big thing as a guitarist. The Moving Sidewalks continued to appear along with the 13th Floor Elevators at the short-lived yet legendary Houston psychedelic venue, Love Street Light Circus at Allen's Landing. The Elevators set was cut short by Houston Police who arrested the band's lead singer Roky Erickson for marijuana possession.

Jimi Hendrix gave the Pink Fender Stratocaster he’s holding to Billy Gibbons. Gibbons told Guitar World in 1985, ” He said the color pink was not conductive to burning, so he gave it to me and said, Play on brother…”

Country music legend George Jones confidently strode on to the historical and ornate Majestic Theater in San Antonio Friday night looking relaxed and at ease.

The 80-year-old Jones was preceded with a few cover songs like Waylon Jennings’ “Only Woman That’ll Walk the Line,” and Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” by his talented seven member Georgia Boys Band.

Singing “Why Baby Why,” Jones voice was instantly observed as a little hoarse, but the music icon forged on like the ultimate and passionate performer he is.

“If ya’ll keep that kind of enthusiasm up, we are liable to stay here ‘til 2 or 3 in the morning,” Jones told the willing crowd. “Heck, I’ve been known to stay 2 or 3 days in my time.”

Oh, I am sure we can sing you plenty of drinking and cheating songs.”

Dressed in a black and white shirt, black jeans, black leather jacket, and peering through his tinted glasses, Jones’  could still muster out his old familiar style of long-syllabled country singing.  He was immediately embraced by the Majestic fans with a standing ovation.

Fans felt blessed to see Jones, who debuted his first single hit in 1959 for Mercury Records. Much of his life was chronicled on a back screen behind the band as he sang hits like “I Always Get Lucky With You,” “You’re Still On My Mind,” “The Race Is On,” “The Window Up Above” and “Walk Through This World With Me.”

I can’t think of any singer that can make a sad country song any sadder than George Jones.

True to his roots, the music pioneer honored The Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame and even paid a stirring tribute by dedicating his song “Who’s Going to Feel Their Shoes” to friends as the images of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Tammy Wynette, Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Jimmy Rogers, Charlie Rich, and Marty Robbins flashed on the screen.

Brittany Allyn was featured in some of the opening songs, and sing duet with Jones with some of the Wynette-Jones hits, like “Golden Ring.”

Goosebumps were plenty when Jones went through of a medley of  “She Still Thinks I Care” and “White Lightning” and ended his show with his signature hits “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair.”

Anybody Got Remembrances/Memorabilia from The Cellar Clubs?

Wm. Wms. at the Big D 60's Yahoo Group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BigD60s/
posted this information. Can anybody out there help?

Participation in The Cellar documentary

I have spent the past six weeks working on a documentary about The
Cellar. The more research I read, and the more interviews I get on
tape, the more excited I become. This documentary will be able to
reach a much larger audience than first I expected because of its
universal relevance that will be established as the documentary
explores the Cellar Club's juxtaposition to the relevant social issues
of that time, parochial as well as global. It will also examine
poignant existential issues within a specific population as it
remembers the past and reflects on the present.

I need photos, film, and memorabilia related to The Cellar (Fort
Worth, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio) as soon as possible. This is
where the members of the list serve can help me in telling The Cellar
story. I am only interested in photos or film taken in or in front of
the clubs between 1959 and 1974, and/or musicians, patrons, and
employees associated with The Cellar during said time frame. The
photos that are published on the web are exactly what I´m looking for,
except I need better resolution than can I can get by copying from the
internet. If you can help me, I need CD ROMs of your images or the
actual photos so I can scan them. If you do send photos for me to
scan, they will be handled with the upmost care and promptly returned.
I can´t guarantee that every image will be used, but I need to have as
much choice as possible.

TEEN CANTEEN REUNION SET FOR SUN. AUG. 23
"Samstock" Reunites Bands and Musicians from the 60s and 70s
Party Like It's 1969!

(San Antonio, TX) Until a few years ago, San Antonio's Teen Canteen was relegated to "remember when?" status. The northside nightclub that catered to teenagers during the 1960s and 70s lay forgotten in the city's musical history…almost. At Samstock: the Teen Canteen Reunion 2009 on Sunday, August 23 at Floore's Country Store, more than a dozen bands and musicians from its heyday will reunite for fun and to pay tribute to owner-promoter Sam Kinsey.

At the behest of local civic and church groups, Sam Kinsey opened the
first Teen Canteen in 1960, at Jefferson Methodist Church Hall. Kinsey played deejay to the youthful crowds, spinning 45s on a portable record player. This was the format for several years, as the Canteen moved around to several locations, including a ballroom dance studio, until it settled at Wonderland (now Crossroads) Mall in 1963.

In its new, larger location, the Teen Canteen went from records to the real thing. It housed two separate stages so bands could perform at the same time during the regular rounds of Battle of the Bands and entertain the hundreds of teens who flocked there. In 1968, the Canteen moved to its last location on Bitters Road across from Northeast Stadium, the place it would occupy until it closed in 1977, a victim of the lowered drinking age and more generous all-ages policies.

In retrospect, the Teen Canteen was the staging ground for San Antonio's vibrant rock & roll scene before the Beatles until the dawn of punk, and its roster of local and touring bands made it a gem in the crown of Texas music. The Teen Canteen gave many San Antonio and area bands their start, including the Laughing Kind, Homer, the Chayns, the Outcasts, Swiss Movement, Virgil Foxx, the Zilches, Rocksand, Castle, Spook Julius, Mr. Moose, Meadow, Mourning Dove, Stillwater, Excalibur, Nassur Blue, United, and Island.

Those bands and/or members of them will be performing at Samstock. Teen Canteen owner and promoter Sam Kinsey will be in attendance. For website updates and band times, see http://www.mikesban darchive. com/news

Samstock: the Teen Canteen Reunion 2009 takes place at Floore's Country Store, 14492 Old Bandera Rd., on Sun. Aug. 23, 4-midnight. Cover is $10, the memories are free.

Also from MM:
Sam Kinsey from the Teen Canteen has finally gotten out his memorabilia. He kept all his posters, handbills, flyers, band photos - everything! - from his years with bands, including the Teen Fair '64 where the Stones played their first two and only Texas dates that year.
